I can’t help but feel that the news is getting more and more depressing. Excluding the injustice and violence, natural disaster and extreme poverty that is ravishing other countries, the national news that directly affects us as citizens has me quite concerned. It seems that it’s opposite day everyday where the politicians and policymakers do their ‘jobs.’ The news about cuts in federal programs, because there simply is not enough money to go around to sustain them, is depressing because the hardest hit by these cuts are the needy. It is the needy that should be extended the most help, and people who need vastly outnumber those who do not have an immediate need for help for basic necessities. While yes, I do not agree that my hard-earned money, and the money that my family makes should be funneled into programs that are enabling those who are taking an advantage of a broken system, ie welfare and public assistance, I do believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. I am appalled that programs that are designed to help the needy are being cut, while taxes for the wealthy were cut and the rich are remaining quite fat and happy despite struggling families who must budget and cut out many things they can no longer afford. Why do they who live in abundance and opulence deserve the help of the government when obviously they have no need for it?
If there is no call for repair to the system then any hope for economic change is futile. The rich will keep getting richer, and the poor will keep getting poorer. In this country, if the trend of keeping the silent, suffering majority from economic relief and lining the pockets of the wealthy, then there will be no change in the overall state of the whole.
